Appendix D: Adobe Illustrator Tips
The following topic is provided in this section:
Using EPS FPOs
Your Xinet system can be set up to create EPS FPOs from all files. If you place these FPOs as linked images in Illustrator documents, Xinet will correctly substitute high-resolution images at print time. You cannot tint incorporated FPOs, but image rotation, skewing, and scaling will work with Xinet. To create EPS FPOs, use one of these strategies:
If your administrator has set up a Xinet volume to generate EPS FPOs (no matter what image format the high-resolution image happens to be), you only need to place high-resolution images in the high-resolution volume to generate EPS FPOs. Check with your administrator about this possibility.
If your administrator hasn’t established special EPS-only FPO generation, all image formats except EPS will create TIFF FPOs. Therefore, to create EPS FPOs, you must convert your high-resolution images to EPS. These will create EPS FPOs when placed in a high-resolution Xinet volume.
Saving Illustrator EPS documents
If you try to save changes to an Illustrator eps file, you will be prompted to choose a new filename for a Save as operation. The result of the Save as operation will be an Illustrator native file.
Image formats
tiff and eps are the only fully supported high-resolution image formats at this time.
Extracting images
Only embedded eps images from Illustrator eps documents can be extracted; embedded raster images or any type of linked images cannot be extracted. We strongly recommend extracting images to a Xinet volume. In this way, a pict preview and custom icon for the image will be generated. If an image is extracted to the local hard drive or a non-Xinet volume, the pict preview and custom icon will be lost. One consequence of this is that the Illustrator preview of the document will no longer show the placed images.
